LONDON'S AGONY

FUND TO CLOSE.

MONDAY LAST DAY.

A MONEY-BOX IS OPENED!

Seven-year-old Desmond brought his money-box to the "Star" office to-day. It had to be broken open by a mechanic with a chisel, for it had been stoutly soldered. An odd shilling or two, a few sixpences, many threepences, pennies and half-pennies were tumbled on to the counter. Young Desmond proudly paid the lot into the "Heart to Heart" Appeal Fund for the suffering civilians of London.

When this selfless spirit is abroad, it is little wonder that the "Auckland Star's"' fund mounted to-day to the substantial sum of £21,354. Nearly a thousand pounds have been paid in since noon yesterday. To-morrow it is expected the total will show another sharp rise, since the district runners' lists will be acknowledged, and their aggregate collection will i>e added to the fund.

Since the . fund opened less than r« fortnight ago there have been score* of large donations, but the total has mounted steadily with the accretion of innumerable small subscriptions. It has been noted that many of the banknotes received have been carefully creased. Others gave off a faint perfume or stnelled strongly of camphor. These were donations made from the little hoards, the "rainy day" money, of working girls and elderly women. Such generous giving needs no commendation in cold print. It is of the essence of genuine charity. Truly has this been a -Heart to Heart" appeal!

The "Auckland Star's"' fund will close on Monday. The total is already one which will gladden the heart of every unselfish subscriber, but it can and will be even larger if, in the remaining three day*, all who have deferred the act of giving translate their intentions into reality. Donations can be posted, or paid in at the ground-flojr counter of the company's Shortiand Street office, which is open till 9 p.m. nightly, except Sunday.

Factory Girls' Sacrifice. The spirit of ch<-errul giving, which has characterised the "Heart to Heart" Appeal, is well expressed in a donation of £!) 5/6 received to-day from the young women of Bycroft, Ltd.'s factory. With this donation, which was contributed to by about 100 employees, came the subscription list, headed by the appeal which was written by the forewoman before the li«t went the rounds. "I am making a direct appeal to the complete girl staff of the factory to contribute one shilling each, to-day and on the following Wednesday, towards the relief of those in distress in London," wrote the forewoman. "They need not only our prayers, but our help . . . The position is desperate. The smallest thing will help someone lees fortunate than ourselves. I have absolute confidence in you girls. It may mean a little sacrifice—perhaps even to walk one section for a week, or to do with a little less of to-day's luxuries. But what a great feeling it is to be doing something for someone! And if you all have homes, parents and loved ones—you will, I know, appreciate the fact that we, so well off here, must help at once. I know I can already put 'thank you* to this, from past experiences."

Year's Profit Donated. A most generous donation was forwarded to-day by the New Zealand division of the Australasian Institute of Secretaries. It represented the net profit of the division for the year ended June 30, 1940. The divisional secretary, Mr. L. Knight, in sending the institute's cheque for over £00, wrote: "Members thought that similar organisations to outs might be encouraged by this action to deal with their surplus profits in the same manner. You are at liberty, therefore, to refer to the action taken, in the hope that others somewhat similarly constituted will follow suit."

Mount Roskill School pupils have worked energeticallv for the "Heart to Heart" Appeal, and to-dav had the satisfaction of sending £11 3/6 to the
