FUND CREATED'
STUDY OF MUSIC. ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS. At a meeting of the metropolitan executive of the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council last evening it was decided to create a capital fund of £2400, to be known as the Centennfal Festival Music Scholarship Fund, which will be under the control of the Auckland University College. A profit of £800 from the recent Centennial musical festival has been augmented by a grant of £1200 from the Auckland Metropolitan Centennial account, and there will be a Government subsidy of £400. A report from the fine arts committee, suggested that the income from the fund should be used, either to provide scholarships, or to provide grants to assist qualified students to go overseas for advanced study. The final decision to award either a scholarship or a grant is to be made by the University College Council, and Messrs. C. B. Plummer and T. W. M. Ashby were appointed to confer with the college council. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, said that the proposal would provide Auckland with a permanent Centennial memorial.
On behalf of the University College Council, Mr. W. H. Cocker expressed appreciation of the endowment, and Professor H. Hollinrake said that he hoped that the endowment would mean the creation of a centre of music training, where students could get the fullest instruction in all branches of music.
