LONDON'S AGONY

"HEART TO HEART."

TOTAL NOW £20,440.

FUND CLOSES ON MONDAY.

During the 24 hours ended at noon to-day the "Auckland Star" received contributions to the "Heart to Heart" Appeal Fund amounting to £1842. These donations carry the total sum subscribed substantially past the £20,000 mark, the actual total being £20,440.

This large sum, donated in less than a fortnight, emphasises the open-handed nature of the response made by "'Auckland Star" readers, and reveals the depth to which Auckland hearts have been touched by the sufferings of London civilians under the barbarous bombing of the Luftwaffe, the weapon by which Hitler seeks in vain to break the resistance of our kith and kill in the dear Homeland.

Although the sum of £'20,440 represents most generous giving, it is felt that the well-springs of practical sympathy have not yet been fully tapped. The "Heart to Heart" Appeal will close next Monday, but between now and then there is ample time for all those who have not yet given as fully as their means allow to send in their contribution. The need is great—as reference to the "Star s" overseas news columns shows at a glance—and the small sacrifice entailed in giving should be shared by all in this favoured country. As the fund is about to close, give now and give cheerfully. Don't wait for the last day. Each donation encourages someone else •to give.

Distributors of the "Auckland Star" have been collecting all the week on behalf of the "Heart-to-Heart" appeal. They will be paying in their collections to-day and to-morrow, so that acknowledgment may be made in this column on Saturday. Those who have not been at home when the runner called should see that their contribution is paid into the "Star's" Shortland Street office without delay. Donations may be handed in at the ground-floor counter at any time ui> till 9 p.m.

This morning's contributions includes a generous donation of £1000 from the Auckland Electric Power Board. A donation of £100 has also been received from the Auckland Trotting Club. A letter from the treasurer of the Auckland Community Singing Committee, enclosing a subscription of £40, states: "This amount was contributed to-day and lias at the back of it t'lie genuine sympathy of all who, on Wednesdays, have contact with community singing."
