STREET APPEAL
TO HELP ORPHANS.
SPECIAL DRIVE TO-MORROW.
An effort to raise £10,000 for orphanage work will be made to-morrow by a special appeal to the public, chiefly through street collections. This move, is the culmination of several months' planning and organisation by the Auckland Orphanages' Advisory Council. The appeal will be made in all part:of the province also. The advisory council is associated with 12 homes in which approximately 1000 children are cared for. The hope that the importance of orphanage work would not be lost sight
of amid the other work to-day was expressed yesterday by members of the advisory council.
The representatives said there was a good deal of confusion of thought con cerning the maintenance of orphans in homes since the advent of the Social ■Security legislation. It was not the case that Social Security benefits were paid in respect of every child in homos. Actually, only about 10 per cent of the children came within that category. The major portion of the homes' incomes was derived from private and public subscriptions.
In the city to-morrow a colourful carnival procession has been arranged, and community singing will be held at noon in the Town Hall, where a number of children from the orphanages will be special guests.
As a mark of his appreciation of the work of the Auckland Orphanages' Advisory Council, Mr. A. E. Pizzev, an Australian visitor, has forwarded a donation of £10 to the council's special fund.
