BIG BUTTER OUTPUT.
THE PAST YEAR'S RECORD.
According to the Commonwealth Statistician butter production in Australia in 1939-40 established a new record of 4,253,600cwt. Factory output was 4,705,039cwt, which was 170 ? 000cwt more than in the previoue year, and 84,000c\vt more than the previoue peak year of 1934-35. It ie stated that despite this large production the season was not uniformly favourable throughout Australia. The only States with better production figures than last year were Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The Statistician said there had been a remarkable development in the production of cheese in Australia during the last four years. It had increased by S3 per cent to 630,000cwt in 1939-40. Bacon and ham production had remained fairly stable at just over 70,000,0001b a year, tout pork production had increased greatly. In ten years, since the depression, it had increased by more than 100 per cent to over 80,000,0001b.
