THE WAR FUNDS.
AN INQUIRY URGED. RED CROSS OPERATIONS. The Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council decided ait a meeting last evening to ask for a Government inquiry as the outcome of a complaint that the New Zealand Red Cross Society was continuing to collect funds specifically for the relief of sick and wounded, in spite of the large amount already raised for that purpose. . The secretary, Mr. K. L. Usmar, said that the matter had been discussed at a meeting of provincial council secretaries at Wellington, and dissatisfaction had been expressed. The chairman, Sir Ernest Davis, said the matter could only be cleared up by the appointment of a Government commission of inquiry. Mr. J. A. C. Allum considered that if such a commission were set up, it should go into the whole question of the collection of funds.
On the motion of Mr. W. Jonee, of Whangarei, it was decided to recommend to the National Council that an endeavour be made to have an inquiry undertaken by a commission into the raising of funds for patriotic purposee, with particular reference to the Bed Cross. •
