GIVE NOW!

LONDON FUND. " HEART TO HEART. ,, DONATIONS TOTAL £18,015. No previous appeal launched in Auckland for charitable purposes has met with such immediate and sustained response as the "Heart to Heart" fund for the suffering civilians of London, opened by the "Auckland Star." At noon to-day the fund stood at £18,015. 1 It is obvious that, as generous giving continues, the £20,000 mark soon will be passed, and subscribers will have the pleasure of having participated in one of the most successful efforts made in this city on behalf of people in the depth of distress. It is anticipated that a really substantial sum will be added to the fund at the end of the current week, when district distributors of the "Auckland Star," with their friendly contacts with thousands of readers, will pay in their collections. It is reported that, as the distributors go from house to house, they are meeting with a warm-hearted response, as they tender their official collecting sheets. The majority of "Star" subscribers have their donations put aside, ready for the call. In no case has it been necessary to explain the urgent necessity for giving. People are subscribing gladly, some only a few shillings, according to their means, but all are responding. Look for the acknowledgment of "Star" runners' lists next Saturday. Quota Does Not Apply. It must be emphasieed again that every penny given to this "Heart to Heart" fund is for the relief of the suffering people of Britain. The "Star" has been officially assured of that, and is happy to pass the assurance on to its readers. It is true that a quota has been fixed for Auckland, since the whole of New Zealand ie giving freely to the relief of those made homeless, or who suffer in any way. However, the quota will not apply to the "Auckland Star's" fund, since every penny raised over and above the amount fixed will be set aside for a further bank draft on London, to aid the distressed. Give now, and so encourage others to subscribe! "London Calling." The spirit of the " Heart to Heart" appeal is well expressed in two verses of a poem composed by Mr. A. J. Lewie, of 'Whangarei, under the title " London Calling! n There's a thrill at the sound of a clock chime, ten thousand miles away. When it comes to us over the ether at regular time each day. It tells, that the heart ol the Empire Is throbbing Just the same. And with straining of ears we listen to be sure we hear the name— " London Calling! " If the planes are roaring above them, pouring death and destruction around. Though the heart of the Empire U trembling and its buildings an rased to the ground. There will still be a hand to help than, in city and country and town. The response to Uμ call will be fitting, and our bands will be going deep downLondon's Calling ! Anglican Church to Aasiat. A gesture which, in its practical Christianity, is ,well worthy of wider adoption has been decided upon by the Vestry of St. Andrew's Anglican Chrrch, Epsom. At a meeting last night it was decided to hold a "Day of Special Remembrance," concerning the trials which London is undergoing, on Sunday week, October 6. On that day the whole of the collections will be devoterf to the "Heart to Heart" appeal of the "Auckland Star." If other churches decide to follow this lead, they should inform the "Star," so that reference to their effort may be made in this column. The amount received in these olmreh collections will be iMibls«hed in the "Star" on the following Monday. v Donations Received To day.
