AN UNWARRANTED ATTACK.
While on my way to business this morning, on a city-bound tramcar, I was the disgusted onlooker i« a very embarrassing scene, created by a woman with secminglv no pride in be-~e'f and an uncurbed tongue. The subject of her outburst was a young man who offered his seat to a young lady who was standing. This caused him to stand next to a woman (seated) with two children, who immediately started to hurl abuse at him for not being overseas with the boys. He stood it until the tram reached Synionds Street section, when he took a vacant seat behind this woman who continued her abuse. By this time I was beginning to wonder when he was going to retaliate. At last he asked the woman what she meant by it, to which she replied by calling him a mongrel and white feather. The young man naturally did not take, names lying down, and replied: "He might be a mongrel, but refused to talk to people like her." She then stood up and slapped the young man across the face and continue! her abuse. Why should j>eoj>le be allowed to get away with behaviour ]ike this in a public conveyance? Surely the conductor shoulJ liave intervened? May 1 -tate. on making inquiries, that I ascertained that the young man *he i* und<T-aj:e for overseas service, and, furthermore. Is in the Territorial force, is entering camp on the Ist of October for at least a period of three months, and is entitled to respect.
FAIR PLAY.
