CHIEF EVENTS.

CUP AND FLYING. LATEST PERFORMANCES. USEFUL FIELDS ENGAGED. The epiing meeting of the Ohinemuri Racing Club opens at Paeroa next Saturday, and judging by the fields for the first diiy some good racing is promised. Mazir (9.0), the topweight in the Poland I Cup, ie a good house over a distance when at his beet, and his couple of races fhie season should have improved him. •Hβ won this event two years ago with 8.1, beating Gold Vaate (7.C) and Cheval de Volee (7.10). The latter is also engaged with 8.7, but he Jia« not won a race since he accounted for the last Auckland Cup. Clinch (8.3) won the Avondale Cup with 7.1, finishing on very solidly over the last furlong to score narrowly. That was a niile and a quarter, anil the Poland Cup is an extra furlong, but fchaV should not trouble him. Besiege (8.1) has not started since he annexed i*!ie Centennial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Matamata in July, after leading practically throughout. He carried 7.8V2 on that occasion, and hae prospects. Valamito (7.11) has not had much racing recently, but he will l>o

improved ae the result of his efforts at Avondale, where ihe was in th-e picture for a while.

Mintlaw (7.9) has 31b more than he carried into fifth place in the Avondale Cup. He finished third in the Takapuna Cup and second in the Herries Cup at Te Aroha, both run over a mile and three furlongs, last season, and t'he distance should not trouble him. . Raceline and Sunny Downs Have each 7.2. The former won over a mile and a quarter and 180 yds at Rotorua in July, and last month ran second to Noble Fox over nine furlongs at New Plymouth. Sunny Downs was third to Besiege and Erlick over a mile and a quarter a>l , Matamata laet July, and second to Raceline at.Rotorua a .little later, which are Wβ bust starts. Of tiheee on the minimum Coronation, Kilcash and Hunting Bee seem the beet. Coronation was going well in the Avondale Cup at the turn, where 'he ran wide- out. He had only one race last season, and that was in a eprint event at Matamata last July. As a three-year-old in the.previous season he gave every indication of staying on well, and won twice over a mile and a quarter. He fa a possibility. Clinch,- Besiege, Mintlaw and Coronation may be in request j\mt now. The Open Sprint. Llangollen (9.10) heads the open sprint— tthe -Flying Handicap—and even with this big. impost ehe is by no means out of it. Laet season she did not race from November till the Rotorua meeting in July laet, when, with 10.7, she was beaten by a length and a half by Hum-a-Song, to whom she was conceding 2V& stone. This was her last effort, and ehe will again 'take some beating if in the same fettle, for ehe lookad exceptionally well on that occasion. Proud Fox (9.0) was third in the Admiralty Handicap, six furlongs, at the Pakuranga meeting last month with 9.9, and he should be improved. Corato and Pirate King have 8.13, and both have yet to -start this term. However, last season Corato won the open eprint on tftie second day at Paeroa in Mareh last, and was later placed in both open sprints at Whangarei in April, which were his last outings. Pirate King's 'best performances laet season were in winning a mile event at Te Aroha, and the Railway Handicap, eix furlongs, at Avondale, in the autumn. Lornacre (8.10) was second to Palustre in the open eprint on the second day of the latter meeting, whidh was his last placed effort. Te Takina and Silver Quex are on the 8.5 mark. The former won over eix furlongs at Te Rapa in May, and seven furlongs at Te Awamutu in June, and ran third in the Hamilton Handicap, six furlongs, to Young Paddorf and Te Monowai at Te Rapa a little later, while Silver Quex was ithird to her at Te Rapa and won the next day. Bronze Month (8.3) has plenty of pace, and his last success was over a mile- at Ellerjglie. at. Easter. Gaymies (7.8) showed up well at Avondale, which was her firet start this season, and ehe should again be in the picture. Valimeen (7.12) was a good third to Erndale and Blonde Princess in tJie'President's Handicap, six furlongs, at Avondale last week, and is evidently on the improve. At her best ehe 'is a smart mare. Maxam (7.9) won this event last year, and ehe lhae also plenty of pace. The course suits her. Olympus (7.8) was placed in hie last two starts and made quite a good sbQS'ing to the turn in the Handicap, six furlongs, at Avondale yesterday week. Dinky Di (7.4) and Sure Pay (7.0)- were both winners de two-year-olds laet. season, while of the others Mies Te Kpura and Sir Robin, -who are on the minimum, appeal meet. jaymifls, Proud: Fox, I/langoHen and Maxam may have most friends at present.
