ANCIENT EGYPT.
DAYS OF CLEOPATRA. SAME PROBLEMS TO-DAY. "Business life in the day* of Cleopatra'' wis the title of. an unusual address given by Mr. E. M. Blaiklock. M.A., at the weekly luncheon of the Auckland Rotary Club, held at Milne and Choyce*s reception hall to-day. The speaker said last century archaeologists began to realise that there were things more important than pyramids and temples in Egypt, and ancient life had been found in all its variety. In those ancient days, he said, there was a sales tax of 10 per cent. (Laughter.) Men were taxed from the day they were born to the day they died. There were quotas, just as there were to-day. It was also good in those days to have a friend in a Government office. (Laughter.) The speaker quoted bright items from ancient documents and said that the life of the Egyptians had its joys and gladness, but many of the same problems and difficulties which existed in modern life. It was announced during the luncheon that next week a collection would be made for the London Fund, also that the Rotorua forum would be held on November 8 and 9.
