SELFRIDGES' RECOVERY. Selfridge's (Australasia). Ltd.. chain stores, Sydney, report for the half year ended July 31, after making full provision for taxation and depreciation, a net profit of £7482. compared with a net loss of £3272 for the half year ended July 31. 1939, an Improvement of £10.754. The directors report "satisfactory improvements in turnover and gross profits." Sales for August were "more than maintained." Stock conditions were difficult following on the practical elimination of certain nonsterling markets, but the company had taken early steps to exploit avenues of supply from Great Britain. The directors add: "We commence the now current half year in a happier merchandise position than was the case last year, so that, provided conditions are reasonably well maintained, we may look forward to improved results for the full year ending January 31, 1941."
