MUSICAL AUSTRALIANS.
CONDUCTOR'S IMPRESSIONS. Australians have developed a wonderful appreciation of music, according to Mr. A. Dorati, who was a passenger* for San Francisco by the Matson liner Monterey, when it arrived from Sydney this morning. He has been a guest conductor for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for symphony 'concerts, .together with Sir Thomas Beecha'm and Professor Schnevoigt, and has also conducted for the Russian Ballet, combining both positions.
He was full of praise for the Sydney orchestra which,' he said, compared favourably with Minneapolis Orchestra in the United States. The ballet season, he added, had been remarkable, running 12 weeks in Sydney, the same time in Melbourne, with two two-week seasons in Adelaide and Brisbane, and a return season of six weeks in Sydney. Mr. Dorati said the standard of music was high in the Commonwealth and it was a pity that recordings were not made of the Sydney and Melbourne orchestras which were fully worthy of ihe at NV ° Uld ' be dOUC iu
