YOUNG PAINTERS.

EXHIBITION OF WORK. Ex-students of the Elam School of Art known as the Rutland Art Group, opened their annual exhibition at the City Art Gallery to-day. The exhibition comprises over 100 works in oil, water colour, drawings, etchings, wood and lino-cuts, lithographs and an interesting section of pottery, it is an impressive collection of young painters work and contains much of aesthetic value and interest. An outstanding feature is the exquisite colour sense portrayed in a large number of the works, and there is a welcome diversity of m mu est ln But> i ect matter and technique. The figure compositions are especially commendable. Among these "Choir," by Esnie Hughes, is of outstanding merit and worthy of any exhibition. She exhibits a range of excellent work. The beautiful colour in Joan Lillicrap's paintings is worthy of high praise, as also is the rich and dramatic design expressed by Helen Brow. Among Bessie Christie's paintings "Autumn Leaves" is also distinguished by a fine colour and her lithograph, "Balinese Puppets," is a technical triumph. Frances Hunt has two outstanding exhibits, "King Country Sketch," an expressive pen and colour drawing, and a "Still Life" of unusual charm in delicate colour. "Interior," by H» E. Read, is a highly successful rendering of a difficult subject. Another commendable work is the delightful landscape, "Green and Gold," by J. Harrison Smith. Vida Steinert paints with strength and conviction. "Sketch, West Coast," by M. Crookes, is a water colour of extreme delicacy . and sensitive design. A. G. Funnell's "The Bridge Whangarei," is an impressionist painting of the first rank, J. Crippen, May Gilbert, R. Stenberg, P. Crowley, Ruth Dillon and A. J. Inglis are among those who make a valuable contribution to a really fine exhibition. .
