CABLES TO EGYPT.
On August 17 I sent a cable to Egypt, 10 words in all, and paid 4/6. which "as tho supposed rate. I understood the address went free and 5d a word was charged for the message. Now nearly a month afterwards. I have word that there was 10/ extra to par on that cable. Of course 1 paid it. That made it 14/G for a few words, of birthday greetings, more than 1/5 a word, including the address. How is it that some can send cheaper cables to their sons than others? My son ~ are oil active service, First Echelon. E. -JOHNSTON.
The explanation by officials at the Auckland Post Office is that the cheapest rate to Egypt is 1/5 a word deferred rate, and a concession is made to the extent of charging five words only for the address. The 5d a word rate with free address applies to Empire points only, and it has not been possible to make a similar arrangement with, the Egyptian administration.—Ed.
