SAFE BLOWN.
NEWTON BURGLARY. THEFT OF SUM OF £30. Early this morning the Druids (Ponsonby Lodge) Hall, 17, Norland' Street, Newton, was broken into and a large safe in the office blown open. The sum of £30, made up of banknotes, silver and postal notes, was stolen. This was the property of the lodge. The burglary was discovered about six o'clock by a constable while on his beat. He found that the front door had been forced with a jemmy, while the door leading from the main hall entrance to the office had also been forced. Judging by the manner in which the safe door was blown open with gelignite, there is no doubt that an experienced safebreaker was at work. The safe was crammed full of documents and books, but none of these was disturbed, the thief contenting himself with taking the cashbox containing the money. A resident of Cobdcn Street, which is near Norland Street, on going to work this morning, found the damaged cashbox in his back garden. The cashbox had been ripped'open and was empty. Although several people were asleep in the house next door to the hall tliey were not awakened by any explosion.
