VALUELESS CHEQUES.
BUILDER BEFORE COURT. HAMILTON, Thursday. Pleas of guilty were entered by Thomas Miehael Landy, aged 47, builder (Mr. H. C. M. Xorris)", before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Hamilton Police Court to-day to five charges of committing false pretences by issuing valuelees cheques for sums aggregating £52 at Walpawa and Stratford.
In statements produced by Constable J. T. Mills accused admitted the offences and said they were due to drinking and gambling.
Counsel said that accused had borrowed money to back horses and to take part in a gambling school. He issued the cheques in order to raise money to pay debte contracted in this way. Accused had been a respected citizen of Waipawa and he felt hie position keenly.
On three counts accused wae convicted and discharged and on each of the other two he was placed on 'probation for one year, and was ordered to make restitution of flO. He wae ordered to be prohibited and to refrain from gambling.
