OBITUARY.
MR. JOSEPH MOTLEY. PIOXEER TELEPHONIST. The death occurred in Auckland earlv tins morning of Mr. Joseph Motley, aged So. Mr. Motley was appointed first telephonist in the North Inland to take charge of the exchange at Woodville on June 23, 18S1. four months before Auckland had telephone facilities. The district, in those clays, had only been settled by immigrants four years previously and in addition to his connection with the telephone exchange. Mr. Motlev was also police constable, clerk of the Court and clerk of the Paliiatua Licensing Committee, postmaster, and secretary of the lo««l Oddfellows Lod^e Mr. Motley wa * later district coroner at le Aroha and a justice of the peace He continued his interest in the friendly society movement and «- as presented with a gold medal by the Woodville Lodge after being a member for 50 years. "
