TO AID LONDON.
"HEART TO HEART." TOTAL NOW £15,883. APPEAL IN ITS SIXTH DAY. Now in its sixth day, the "Heart to Heart" appeal launched by the "Auckland Star" stood at £15,883 at noon to-day. Thus the fund which will aid the victims of the aerial onslaught on London grows day by day. It is a response of which Aucklanders may be proud—but it must be maintained. Tomorrow a further list will be published, but owing to the fact that it is a halfholiday, and that type-setting facilities will be coping with the usual Saturday rus-h, contributors who wish their donation to be recorded are asked to have them in by 10.30 a.m.
Every bomb that falls on London is a blow at the heart of the Empire—a blow at us. Out in this still-peaceful Dominion we can do little to help, but that little we can do gladly. We can do it through the "Heart to Heart" appeal, achieving through it not only a practical demonstration of our sympathy, but also the etriking of a punitive blow at the enemy. Every donation to the "Heart to Heart" appeal is a corpuscle of lifeblood to join the stream flowing along the arteriee of the Empire to that eadlv bleeding but still stoutly pulsing heart. Through that stream we can join in the sacrifice of the people of London, show them I'v our generosity that we are with then the full, help in a small measure; to aliuviate their sufferings, and by the will of our giving strengthen their wil! to endure and fight on.
The Measure of Sacrifice. The people of London, were they looking at these daily lists, would not nieaeure the quality of our giving by the amount of the individual subscription to the fund. They would value and treasure the donation of a shilling as greatly as they would any larger sum —for shillings mean a lot to the people of London at the present time. It is for us to give what we can—and to nieaeure the sacrifice we make in giving against the great sacrifice that is theirs. AVhatever sacrifice we make cannot approach that which they are making. To aid you in your giving, district runners of the "Auckland Star" have been iseued with official collecting sheets, and subscribers to the paper are being invited to give according to their means. Each Saturday the " Star" will acknowledge these subscriptions. Runners will pay in at the. " Star" office on Thursday and Friday, and acknowledgment will then be possible on the following Saturday. Aβ with the main list, all iiidivkliml donations of 10/ and more will be published in connection with the runners* list.
From Varied Sources.' Money is coming in now in a steady stream of large and small amounts, and the total figure, is growing. The Auckland City Council, at a meeting last evening, unanimously decided to vote £1000 to tiie London Fund and to pay the money through the appeal made in the " Auckland Star." Mr. S. Russell, job delegate for Messrs. N. Cole, Ltd., at Waiouru Camp, sends £6 from employees at the camp. Also from Waiouru comes a donation of £1 from the " profanity box " in Cole's No. 1 mess. The managing director of the New Zealand Farmers , Fertilizer Co., Ltd., in forwarding the company'"* cheque -for £100, etated that the directors of the company were unanimous in the opinion ' that the " Heart to Heart Appeal" was worthy of support.
