ART SOCIETY.
ANNUAL REPORT.
NEED IN COMMUNAL LIFE.
The fifty-ninth annual report of the Auckland Society of Arts whicn will fee presented at the annual meeting to be held next week states that the membership consisted of 380 honorary, 180 working and 15 life members, a total of 575 compared with 627 last year. Although not unexpected the reduction in- membership is to be regretted, because more than ever the need in the communal life for what the society stands for is more urgent than at any time in its history.
The attendance at tlie society's principal activity was agaiu satisfactory, the average being 309 persons each day. As regards the travelling country exhibition, it was stated that owing to the present disturbed state of the country and the general participation of all sections of the people in the various war activities, and the increasing difficulties due to transport restrictions, it has not tbeen possible to undertake nearly as much work in this field as was expected, but no possible effort would be neglected to promote and extend this branch of the society's activities.
