LONDON FUND.

" HEART TO HEART."

TOTAL OF £13,506.

FIFTH DAY OF APPEAL.

The "Heart to Heart" appeal made by the "Auckland Star" on behalf of suffering Londoners, victims of the "airblitz," has met with an instant response. Now only in its fifth day, the fund at noon to-day stood at £13,606.

Throughout the week the greater part of the money subscribed has been made in substantial donations of four and three figures, and in numerous contributions ranging from £10 to ten shillings. Donations of a few shillings each have been in a marked minority. If the "Heart to Heart" Appeal is to be a complete success those who can afford only a few shillings—and there are thousands such —must respond at once, for thousands of half-crowns and shillings may amount to more in the aggregate than an impressive list of big donations. To this end, district runners of the "Auckland Star" have been issued with official collecting sheets, and each subscriber to the paper is being invited to give according to personal means. Already the response has been most generous. Give to the "Star" Runner! Each Saturday throughout the "Heart to Heart" appeal the "Star" will acknowledge these subscriptions collected by the district runners. As with the main list, all individual donations of 10/ and more will be published in conjunction with the runners' lists. Runners will pay in at the "Star" Office on Thursday and Friday, and acknowledgment will then be possible on the following Saturday. By reason of the "Star's" intensive circulation throughout the Auckland metropolitan area, it is hoped that the service provided by the district runners will be availed of by those who cannot spare the time to come into the city to make a donation. Generosity has been the keynote of the appeal from the beginning. But it must be emphasised that those capable of making a donation of only a shilling or so should not hold back—give what you can! Give a shilling rather than nothing, but help the Londoners with half a crown if a shilling means no sacrifice! It is an occasion for sacrifice. We are helping our own kith and kin in dire extremity. It'i- a life and death matter! This appeal is from their hearts to ours.

A substantial subscription made up of donations of pennies, threepences, sixpences and shillings, totalling £12 1/6, was made to the "Auckland Star's." Fund yesterday by the officers, N.C.O.'s and men of the First Battalion, the Auckland Regiment (Countess, of Ranfurly'e Own). Before the last event of the battalion sports meeting, held on the Auckand A. and P. Association's showgrounds, Captain W. J. HamptonReynolds, of the Church Army, addressed all ranks through a microphone, inviting them to support the fund. Six territorials held up a large New Zealand Ensign, and as the troops filed off the ground, they gave liberally from the few coins which they carried in their pockets. Mention of the fund was greeted with cheers, and it was obvious that the troops were warmly sympathetic when the sufferings of Londoners were mentioned.

Another military donation was received to-day, indicating that 'the men of the fighting services have -generous instincts towards women and children compelled to endure a bombardment in their own homes. Sergeant J. A. Turnbull, honorary secretary of the headquarters, sergeants' mees at the Papakura Mobilisation Camp, New Zealand I Expeditionary Force, forwarded a cheque for £5 5/ for the "Heart to Heart Appeal" Fund, the proceeds of a collection made in the mess. "This is a measure of our appreciation of what London and the Old Dart are undergoing," he wrote.
