PETROL RATION.
COMMERCIAL VIEWS.
PROPOSED DEPUTATION.
Petrol supply restrictions were discussed at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce this morning, and it was decided Ito support the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, wnich proposed to send a deputation to the Prime Minister asking for relaxation of petrol restrictions, at least, to the extent of granting to users the amount of petrol available prior to July 1, 1940.
The president, Mr. N. B. Spencer, said they should ask why they got less than in England and a great deal less than in Australia. They should get a definite answer as to why they were cut down further than other British countries.
Mr. Harvey Turner said that they should ask for a clear and final statement on the position, as to whether it was a case of conserving petrol or funds. If it were a question of conserving funds it would be just as well for the Government to be frank about it. Mr. Turner eakl that the commercial community should be the first served. The commerce of the country should be the first consideration, and pleasure should come afterwards.
