OPINIONS DIFFER.
DEVONPORT AND TAKAPUNA.
Differing opinions concerning the North Shore water supply were expressed at meetings of the Devonport end Takapuna Borough Councils last night.
At Devonport, the Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, reported that the contractors building the filtration plant were expediting the work,, and that a plan to improve, the water during the period until the j;,tration plant was completed was under consideration.
Mr. H. J. Hutchings: We hear a good deal of criticism about the water but little of what is being done by this council to improve matters.
Other councillors expressed satisfac tion with the present arrangements.
The Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. Guiniven, at the meeting of his council last night, said the trouble was particularly bad at present. Although the .temporary scheme for treating the water would be in operation before Christmas, the filtration plant would not be ready before next summer. Mr. Guiniven added that even when it was available, in a few years the supply drawn from Lake Pupuke would be inadequate and the £15,000 be.ing spent on the filtration plant would be wasted.
It was decided to complain to the Minister of Health, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, and the medical officer of health regarding the quality of the water, also to ask the North Shore Water Board to hold a popular vote as to whether the Waitakere or Pupuke-Wairau schemes should be adopted.
