SOLDIERS' SPORTS.
THE FIRST BATTALION.
TERRITORIALS AT EPSOM.
Officers, N.C.O.'e and hundreds of men of the First Battalion, the Auckland Regiment (Countess of Ranfurly'e Own), competed yesterday in a specially organised sports meeting on the Auckland A. and P. Associations Showgrounds at Epsom. There were eight events on the programme, vhich was of a most varied nature. The general fitness of all ranks was amply demonstrated in the individual performances. In the 880 yards championship event there were one hundred starters, indicating that participation was not confined to a few athletes. Efficiency wae the keynote, as the programme wae completed in under three hours. The day finished with a cinema party at the Regent Theatre, Epsom, over 500 attending. During the interval the commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Worley. V.D., complimented the eporte committee on the efficient way in which the eporte had been rtfn and praised the-men for their sporting instincts. He then presented the prizes. The officials were:—Starters. Second Lieutenants P. Cat -hey and Peterson; judges, second Lieutenants O "-Ul, Mac Donald, McLean, O'Hara: marksmen, 6e;'-\d Lieutenants Jackson. Alrey. ChisSiolm, Low; announcer, ■ Mr. Gordon Hutter; blackboard and results, second Lieutenants Pattison, Hammond; track officials. Second Lieutenants Oerrard. Dyer, Hughes, Naismlth; timekeepers. Captains Hampton Reynolds, Dobson; secretary. Second Lieutenant Butler.
