OVER 700 RUNNERS IN GRAMMAR RACES.
AUCKLAND STEEPLECHASES^ WO'OLIET OPEN CHAMPION. CANTWELL AND BUTTS WIN AGAIN! Despite a stiff westerly 'breeze yesterday afternoon there were some faet times returned in the annual steeplechases of the Auckland Grammar School, and over 700 lads faced the etarter. The couiee was along Mountain Road into Epsom and around Mount Eden, thence via Olive Road home; four of the events being over a distance of from two t'o two miles and a half, the two major races involving the competitors in another trip around the mountain top and making their course something like a mile longer.
No records were broken, the best effort being that of A. C. Cantwell, wJiose 19.2 for the under 17 years section, was only 21e outside ths figures put up last year, in better conditions, by F. N; Orange. Gantwell, who iholds the record for three ages, wae actually timeJ at a couple of seconds faster than I. C. Woolley went in winning the open title.
Besides Cantwell. another of the 1939 winners, T. M. McD. Butts was successful yesterday in a higher division.
Woolley, by the way, was skipper and centre-forward of the Auckland Grammar XI. wlhich won the Xew Zealand secondary schools' hockey championship in the August term holidays.
