At one time the Dead Sea was thought to be a body of water in which fish could not live on account of its being impregnated with salt to such an extent as to render animal life in it impossible. The Dead Sea contains 25 per cent of saline matter, or more than eight times as much as that found in the ocean. It has, however, been discovered that in the Dead Sea, as in other salt lakes, fish exist in the neighbourhood of the inflowing streams which supply the place of the water lost by evaporation.
