WATERWORKS MEN.

QUESTION OF PAYMENT. An appeal heard by the Arbitration Court yesterday concerned the classification of 16 men employed by the Citv Council in regulating the pressure and flow of water at filtration stations at I ltirangi and the pumping station in Svnionds Street. The appeal was against their classification as "switchboard operators," qualifying tliem to oome under the award and pay of the electrical switchboard operators' union. Mr. W. E. Anderson, for the City Council, contended that to turn on and off the electrical motors, and to clean them, required no e.leetrical knowledge, and was work which was merely incidental to the men's real job of looking after the water valves. Mr. K. Simpson stressed the fact that maintenance of the motors j was an important part of the work. The Court reserved decision. J
