After a year of war. with horror piled on horror, the mind almost subconsciously refuses to form mental pictures of the havoc and slaughter wrought by aerial bombing. It is only hen the destruction and suffering is depicted by the camera that the depth and extent of the suffering inflicted upon our kith and kin can be appreciated. PoTgnant in their appeal are the illustrations which have come by air mad. Innocent victims of Germany's gangster methods are seen stoically carrying on in the midst of unexampled desolation. Homeless, bereaved, widowed, fatherless—these . re but words. A moment's reflection as the illustration* are studied brings a pang to the heart. The people suffering thus are not those of some distant, foreign land They are our own kith and kin. flesh of our flesh, bone of our bone. We all of us must give practical expression to those deeply-felt emotions—and give generously, quickly, in the fullness of our hearts. "It cannot happen here, perhaps, but it has happened in the beloved heart of our Empire, and if our boasted ties of loyalty and kinship are to be more than intan- ? our response to the cry for succour must, and will be, openhanded and speedy.
In no defeatist or vanquished >ente does the cry of the maimed anl homeless come to ua across the seas. They who suffer, and who, suffering, stretch out hands to us for aid, could cry enough and bow their heads in subjection to the Nazi terrorists. But that they will never do, Tnie i» total wir. Purse strings everywhere have been loosened. All classes are responding from those fortunate enough to be able to make a four-figure donation to »e war pensioner who sent five shillings, and the aged Londoner who B*ve naif a crown. Many in the community will be able to give Only a shilling or two, yet the shillings quickly mount to pounds, and none should. •title generous instincts by inability to give a large sum. It must be realised that the appeal is to everyone, for where, in this happy New Zealand, is there suffering comparable with that in Britain?
