Mrs. E. Ij. Coekell. who has ju&t arrived in Australia from Italy, hae some interesting comraenta to make on wartime rationing. She was one of the last Kngli«h women to leave Florence, uiul she said that i«he war! paying the < , (]uival< , nt of £i in Knglish money for a pound of tea before her departure.
''This did not strike ?o hard at the Italians as did the impossibility of obtaining coffee, their national beverage," she said. "It could not be procured for love or money, and on many occasions the windows of former coffee shops were smashed by crowds deprived of their usual issue of caffein." Sugar was another substance which was difficult to obtain, and at tea parties guests were warned there would be no "com piemen ta," such as cakee.
