CLINCH SURPRISES.
WINS CUP NARROWLY. MARSHALL HALL'S SPRINT. J A VERT FINE FINISH. j i It was with a fine finishing run that Clinch won the Avomlale Cup on Saturj clay, when the Arondale Jockey Club' , opened its spring fixture. He was a long j way back when the straight was reached j and then put in a great run, just getting lup to beat Beau Repaire on the poet. The I latter had led over the last half mile and I his performance was aiso impressive, while Our Jean, the favourite, after being well placed throughout, hung on for third, with Sly Fox fourth. Clinch paid over a score. The Avondale Stakes was won by Miss Baffles, a filly by Baffles from TracI trix, the dam of Contact and Diana I letrix. She Jumped away smartly from ! No. 2 position and was never afterwards headed, beating River Plate by a length, with Kawariki a good third and Tinketoon fourth. Miss Baffles is the hnst of Baffles' stock to race and immediately after the race she was sold to Mr. E. G. Bridgens at a good figure. River Plate is by Jliad from Gay -Marigold, a good performer in her day, while hie grandam, Queen March, was the best two-year-old of her year, and at the stud produced King March, Limarch, Birthday Boy and others. Kawariki is a half brother to Bright Idea. I The Champion Plate provided a good j finish. The favourite Beau Leon was iu charge at the distance, where he had headed Olaesic, who had led till thus nt-age. He was going comfortably, but Greek Queen then threw out a challenge J and Beau Leon had to be ridden out to : beat her by a head. Classic was a length away third, with Tcllsom next. It was a good performance on the part of the winner, who was having only hie second race ae a three-year-old. The Flying Handicap resulted in a triumph for three-year-olds, as the first tour past the p<*<t— Marshall Hall, Grandora, Phaleron and Gay Miss—were all of that age and there was little between them. Gay Mies and Maxam were the leaders into the straight from Grandora, Brazen Bold. Queen City and Marshall Hall. Gay Miss looked likely at the distance when Phaleron came through on the rails and Grandora and Marshall Hall, on the outside, then put in their claims, and in a blanket finish Marshall Hall got the decision by half a head from Grandora, who beat Phaleron by a head. Gay Mise was right up fourth and then came F'oxniond and Erndale. The concluding event went to Don Quex, who had won at Awapuni the previous week. He was always handy and finished on to score by a neck from Joan Peel, who beat Minority by a similar margin. Beeswing, Esquire and Gaine'e Choice were next.
I ihere was a very large attendance; in fact, the largest Keen on the course for many years. The totalisator handled £64,852 10/, compared with £49,475 10/, an increase of £15,377.
