HEAVY DAMAGE.

1,000,000-Dollar Explosion In

U.S. Powder Plant.

(Reed. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 13.

Three hundred persons are known to be injured and many are missing as a result of the explosion at the Hercules powder plant, at Kenvil, New Jersey.

The damage is estimated at 1,000,000 dollars.

President Roosevelt has requested the Red Cross to assist the injured, which include children in a school • mile away.

Aeroplanes flew to and fro, dropping fire-fighting chemicals, and rescuers dashed* in and out of the flames doing their best to carry out anyone who could be saved, leaving the obviously dead.

Navy and army intelligence officers are co-operating with the police in an investigation into the possibility of sabotage.

About 30 persons are still missing and are feared dead. The probable deathroll is 100, while of the 300 injured, 83 •re in a serious condition.
