ROAD TOLL DEFIED.
WELSH HOME GUARD. "I WILL GO TO GAOL RATHER." (By Air.) LONDON, August Iβ.A Home Guard «as fined 10/ thi» week at Fenarth, Glamorganshire, after refusing to pay a toll of a shilling to take his cab along a road while on dutv He is Mr. Frank Morgan, companr director, of Penartli. He chose to go tb gaol for seven days rather than per the fine. When the chairman of the Penarth magistrates announced the fine, Mr Morgan said: "Uather than pay I will go to gaol. It is iniquitous that this toll road should exist at such a period of national stress. It is not right that, when everyone is fighting for their homes, and giving freely in furtherance of the national effort, landed estates are allowed to enjoy the privileges of » n Act passed in 1867 to levy tolls for their benefit." Suspending the sentence for seven days, the chairman of the magistrates said: "If after the war you raise \ petition for the abolition of the to]]-ai e I am sure you will receive the support of Peuarth residents." Mr. Morgan told the Court that lie was a section leader in the Hoiie Guard and had given up part of his home to accommodate other members. He refused to pay the toll because he was on an errand of national importance. The prosecution contended that, despite hit duties he was not exemept from narment because he was using a private car
