LIQUOR IN BUS.
PASSENGER'S OFFENCE. FINE FOR FIRST CASE. Quite an unusual charge, that of taking an intoxicant while a passenger in a motor omnibus travelling between [Rotorua and Auckland on July 25, was brought against a man in the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. J. Morling, S.M.. to-day. There was no appearance of the defendant. Mr. C. D. Treadgold, of the Transport Department, who prosecuted, said the offences involved a breach of section 7 of the Transport Law Amendment Act, 1930. As far as he was aware, it was the first time such a charge had been brought in Auckland. Defendant, a passenger in the bus, had a bottle of whisky and persisted in offering liquor to other passengers. He left the bus once or twice and got more drink and also consumed whisky in the vehicle. Eventually the driver of the bus took the bottle from him. "Defendant made a nuisance of himself," said Mr. Treadgold "Such conduct could not be tolerated in buses where there were women passengers. However, defendant did not use any bad language." The magistrate imposed a fine of fl 110/, and costs 12/.
