WHARF SCHEME.
OPERATES TO-MORROW CO-OPERATIVE CONTRACT. Ihe new co-operative contract system which comes into operation to-morrow for the loading and unloading of overseas vessels was discussed at the usual monthly stop-work meeting of the Auckland Watersrde Workers' Union this morning. No other statement was forthcoming following the meeting, except that 3lr. R. E. Price, chairman of the Waterfront Control Commission, and Mr. J. Roberts, member of the Commission, addressed the meeting, explaining the details of the new system. It was stated that many misconceptions were cleared up. Ihe system has been in operation in Wellington for weeks, and it is expected that shortly it will be extended to all ports at which overseas vessels call. Later it is hoped to bring all ports, vessels and watcioiuj workers in Xcw Zealand under its scope. Mr. Price *aid that the scheme, tried at Wellington, Timaru and Bluff, has shown that co-operation was better than compulsion. The speed of handling cargoes and the earning capacity of the men had shown increase* ranging from 9 to !)0 per cent.
