THE LORRAINE CROSS.
A medallion bearing the Lorraine Cross, the emblem chosen by General de Gaulle for Free France, .has reached Miss S. C. Field, of 71, Mandeville Street, Riccarton, Christchurch, from a pen-friend in Scot--1 a n d, whose brother was in the evacuation from Dunkirk. The medallion was a memento given to him by a poilu with whom he fought during the retreat. He also obtained a medallion showing a French and British soldier side by side with the inscription, in French. "He fights to the finish," and another with a French Eagle surmounting the Lorraine Cross. The Scottish correspondent speaks of her brother's experienca in France, where an innkeeper's "madaine" prepared appetising meals which satisfied the most ravenous soldiers. She herself, while at a beach resort, saw two enemy bombers chased over the horizon by five British aeroplanes. She mentions the fact that the people of Aberdeen hooted with derision at Hitler's threat to turn their city into granite chip*.
