RED CROSS' LOSS.
BURGLARY AND FIRE. CONSTABLE'S DISCOVERY. HAMILTON, this day. A burglary and fire in the Red Cross depot in Garden Place, Hamilton, was discovered in the early hours of this morning, when a constable on his rounds found the door open and the light on. He summoned the fire brigade, who extinguished the blaze before much damage was done to the shop, which is part of a new block of shops on the northern side of Garden Place. When the constable entered the shop he noticed a fire burning in the rear of the shop. The firemen found clothes and other material on the floor and in a cupboard ablaze. Clothes, wool, soldiers' comforts, Red Cross books and other material were lost as a result of the fire to the total value of about £30. A subsequent investigation disclosed that £5 in cash had been removed. The day's takings, however, had been banked, and only petty cash was in the shop.
