WAR'S EXIGENCIES.
"FISHDT, HUNTDT, SHOOTOT." LOXDOX, Sept. 7. Britain's "liuntiiT, shoot in' and fishm " tradition came into the new* this week. First, there was the su"-*s-tion of a member of the House of Commons, Mr. Ronald Tree, that if Hitler had only indulged in the fine sport of fox-hunting Europe would not be in the sorry position it is in to-day. The fact that most British "'unters" have laid aside hunting-crops for rifles and swords has doubtless stifled a recrudescence of the age-old controversy on the virtues of fox-hunting. Another phase of war conditions has put an end to fishin' and shootin'. There had been the usual autumn lettings of such rights on many properties"nowlocated in militarily reserved areas. The fees from these rights make all the difference in the solvency of large estate* in these days of bi«h taxation, but military necessity permits no discrimination between landowners and k---affluent boardinghouse kee|«ers at coastal resorts. The living of the latter has been destroyed entirely by the banning of the u»ual summer infiltration of tripiiers. The War Office regret* there is no 'provision for compensation, and lays down that democratic principles mo-t i be applied consistently to the landed land to the landladies.'
