HOW THEY PLAYED.

YOUNG AUCKIiANDER'S

SUCCESS

EEILLY AXD B. J. SMITH, JUN.

DO WELL,

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WANGAMJI, this day. Glorious weather favoured players for the foursomes championship yesterday, and there was some great golf played, both by the professionals and the amateurs, but one of the features was the failure of the leading players. Two youngsters—W. B. Eeilly, of Patea, and B. J. Smith, jun., of Auck-' land, led the field home by two strokes, by dint of a splendid second round of 75. The New Plymouth pair, Grey and Ghong wede next with 156, one stroke ahead of the Black brothers. At the conclusion of the morning round Kapi, Tareha and Kuril and Grey and Chong led with 7G's, but there were quite a few SO's and less. Eeilly and Smith were among the early afternoon starters. They had returned a 79 in the morning, and in Ihe afternoon they commenced with a fine four at the first, but the second cost them five, Smith being short with his second. Thence to the turn they played par golf, the card reading 4. 4, 3, 5, 4, 4, 4 and were out in 37. Coming home they started with two fours, Eeilly reaching "Lonsr Tom" green with a masTiiificent iron. They followed this with 3, 4, 4, 3, and had three fours for a 71, but the strain was telling on .them, and they finished 5, 5, 6 for a 75. it was a very fine performance on the part of the two boys, and was deservedly popular. Kapi Tareha and Kuru went badly in the afternoon, takmg SO. Grey and Chon* had a great chance but Chon* after a lon R vaifc.it Bunkcvs Hill, his second badly and the hole. six! TlSl required " three at the last hole to tiJ but m endeavouring to sink a lW ,n,lt overran tlio hole and took five. The Black, brothers also had a chance, but a ball ,n the bunker at the right of the green the 15th foiled -itf" thThole costing them six. Mas waylaying

with Goss but was not playing his best, being out with a lot of shots. Horton was playing great golf, but his partner Jameson is not quite up to championship standard. Dale and Morgan had a fine morning round of 77, but could do nothing right in the afternoon. A. D. S. Duncan and Whyte had two good rounds of 79 and 80, and finished in fifth position. Rutter, of Auckland, and Fuller, of Hawera, won the professionals' event with the splendid score of 147. Both played fine and consistent golf, both in the morning and the afternoon. In the morning they were out in 39 and home in 35, the score for the last nine holes reading 3, 4, 3, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5, 5. In the afternoon they were out in 37. The only outstanding incident was a 20-footer by Rutter for a two at the fifth. They started in with a 3, 4, 3, Fuller playing a brilliant chop at this last hole from a very difficult position. Rutter missed a. foot putt at the next for a four, but then drove a 300-yard ball at the encampment, and Fuller followed on by laying his mashie dead, and they secured an eagle 3. Rutter just missed a 10-footer for a two at the 15th'. and then thev fini: !ied 5, 5, 4 for a 73. Ritchie was playing splendid golf, and was also good through the green, but he missed several very simple putts. Otherwise they mi<rht have been much harder to beat. All the other professionals played very steadily, and their scores were very even.
