IS THERE A BETTER WAY?
SHIPPING THE FRUIT.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Frezing Co., the chairman of directors, Mr. J. E. Makgill, said ther was etill much to be done by way of improving the conditions of carrying fruit to our overseas markets. There was a system, of refrigeration which had already been proved beyond doubt to be very much better adapted to the storage of fruit and cheese, than those now used on the vessels catering for our trade. It had not been, tried on the ships so far. Thie "system was the one that their company had been using for 20 years and there eeemed no good reason, why _it could mot be applied to shipping; quite probably it would prove really more economical to the shipping companies, and undoubtedly better for the fruit and cheese carried, whiTe at least quite as good for butter and meat. This matter should have the careful attention of the Dairy Produce Control and Fruit Control Boards, with a view of getting anyway, one ship fitted with this system, to try it out-_ This system was becoming more recognised as giving the best results and ehould help to allow of putting their fruit on the overseas markets in better and more mature condition. This was a most important matter and one ■which would, if carried out, prove of considerable value to the fruit and cheese trades,, and possibly also for an export trade in gggs.
