THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
"A VERY GREAT SPEAKER," When introducing the Governor-Gen-eral to the large gathering at the opening of the annual exhibition of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, the president, the Hon. T. Shailer Wes'ton, expressed the appreciation of the academy for all that his Excellency had done for them during his whole period as Governor. All regretted his approaching departure for the Homeland, for he had been a great Governor and had shown us a very high example of the civic virtues and attributes of a patriotic gentleman. (Applause.) ' "Perhaps we can say New Zealand has done one thing for his Excellency," eaid Mr. Western. "He caiae to use with the reputation of being a great and when he leaves we shall all feel that he.is a very great speaker." (Applause.) All who had heard the speech delivered by the Governor-General at the laying of the War Memorial foundation stone would recall the simplicity of his diction and the beautiful vision he gave of the graveyard in France.
