HUNTING CRY'S GUINEAS.
ADMIRAL DRAKE BEATEN. SPRING HANDICAP TO KICK OFF. GREAT CHARTER SECOND LEG OF DOUBLE. LAST SIX FAVOURITES PAY DIVIDENDS. (By Telegrapn.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Sunday. The HaAvke's Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting was held yesterday ill wintry weather, which occasionally was showery. The attendance was fair, and tho track good. The totalisator handled £13,470, as against £15,374 ]{?.st year. Hard Gold was a warm favourite for tho Hurdles, but he was never going well, and finished a fair way back. Essential and Tanagra made tho early running from -Royal Elm, Princess Elizabeth and Alaric. Down the back the leading pair faded out, leaving Alaric in charge from Royal Elm, Peshwa, Jen and Tresham. Ponjola became prominent on the turn, but the order into the straight was Royal Elm and Tresiam from Jen, Peshwa and Alaric. Royal Elm drew away after jumping the last fence, and won by just over a length from Treshain, who was five lengths ahead of Jen. Then came Peshwa and Alaric, with Essential further back at the head of the bunch. . Royal Elm was always handy, and won nicely irom Tresham, who ran a much better race- than any of his previous form suggested. Jen, Alaric and Peshwa looked likely at various stages, but were well beaten. Essential made a fair showing for a novice. Favourite Defeated. I'm Alone, with Goldfinch up, was a good favourite for the Maiden Race, but from No. 13 he dwelt at the start and was never in the hunt. Tea.Taster and King Acre showed most speed and soon hit the front, Tea Taster leading round the turn and into the straight from King Acre, Winloch, Manifesto and Best Friend. Once in a line King Acre challenged and got up to beat Tea Ta&ter by half a length. Manifesto was a couple of lengths back third, clear of Winloch, who in turn was well clear of the bunch, in which San Quex, Merry Melody and Auda were the most prominent. The dividend payers never gave their opponents a look in. A Great Finish. Form pointed to The Masher and Chopin in the hack mile, and they were both solidly supported. In an exciting finish The Masher just squeezed home from his rival, with the rest well beaten. Irish Court, Clever, The Masher and Chopin was the order early, but running out of the back and past the half-mile Clever and Clarendon led from Irish Court, The Masher, Chopin, Arrowhead and Tourist. Once in line, Chopin shot through, and with The Masher in attendance "began an exciting struggle. At the poet The Masher had his nose in front. Arrowhead was six lengths away third, with Tourist fourth; then came Clever, and the bunch was headed by The Mug. The leading pair were too <*ood for the opposition. Clover ran a fair race for a "first up" for several months. The Three-year-old Classic. Hunting Cry and Admiral Drake were, the only two considered to have any chance in the three-year-old classic, and both went out at very short prices. Hunting Cry won . very, easily, while Admiral Drake was nearly beaten for second. Hi nting Cry was first out and led from Air Laddie and Admiral Drake. Air Laddie went to the front down the back and showed up leading from Hunting Cry, Admiral Drake, Ex Dono and My Own, Don Quixote whippiug in. They closed up on the turn, and before reachj ing the straight Admiral Drake had shot ahead, leading into the straight by two lengths from Air Laddie, Hunting Cry, My" Own and Ex Dono. Hunting Cry threw out a strong challenge when in line, and came- on to win by two lengths from Admiral Drake, who just lasted long enough to beat My Own by a head. Ex Dono was a couple of lengths off fourth, with Air Laddie handy. Then came, a gap to Don Quixote and Roundelay. Hunting Cry outclassed his opponents, who. look a moderate lot of three-year-olds. Roundelay bled slightly on pulling up. Kick Off Again. Kick Off in the Spring Handicap represented a good wager on form, as he beat Piuthair at Wanganui, and ho started a good favourite, though there was also solid backing for King's Jest. In the finish Kick Off won nicely. Mountain Heath and High Court led from Kick Off and "Blimp, then Queen's Choice, and King's Jest went forward past tho haif and joined Mountain Heath and High Court, and they turned for homo ahead of Kick Off. The last-named drew up on tho rails, and won by a length from Queen's Choice, who also came through on the rails and beat High Court by three-quarters of a length. King's Jest was fourth, with Mountain Heath next, and Blimp last. They were a moderate lot, decisively defeated by the veteran. Simba Best Two-year-old. On the strength of smart track gallops, Chryeology was nearly £200 better backed than Simba in the Nursery, but he had no chance of defeating the Wanganui winner. Chrysology, Siraba, Rapallo, Alliance, Sea Scout and Princess Betty were first away, but Simba soon hit'the front and led into the straight from Chrysology, Sea Scout, Rapallo, Alliance and Princess Betty. All except Simba ran wide into line, j especially War Worn. Siraba came on and won by four lengths from Chrysology, who beat War Worn by half a length. Sea Scout was fourth, followed by Princess Betty, Rapallo and Alliance. Simba's experience etood to him, while Chrysology and tho others ran green. At the same time the winner stood out from his field. Chrysology has lots of pace, and the finishing run of War Worn wa« quite a feature. Ho ia a brown colt, by Quin Abbey from War Plume, carrying tho same colours as Admiral Drake. Surprise in Hack Sprint, Potcmcy caused u, bit of a surprise- in the Hack Bpint, but ho beat the favourite, Sylvan Bull, all tho way, and really represented KO od winning form Tβ Awha moved (mi, hut Potency soon took the lead from Keen, Tβ Awhn Parl, Boraeru, Sylvan Bell, Bhob Silk, ■ iiiid Royal Parade. Parl and Cuticle foil
at the half-mile. Potency led into the straight from Sylvan Dell, Tβ Awha, Bernera, and Shot Silk. Sylvan Dell challenged in the run home, and, although she looked like prevailing, Potency produced a reserve effort in the last few strides, and won by half a head.
