STEAMER WAINUI.
IN THE BREAKERS' HANDS. DISPOSAL OF HULL. BREAKWATER AT WHANGAPARAOA The old Union Company steamer Wainui, which has been lying in "Rotten Row" ior some time, was towed io Julian's wall this morning to be stripped by shipbreakers. The hull h.,s been sold to Mr. R. Shakespeare, and is to be used as a breakwater at Whangaparaoa. The Wainui was built in ISB6 and was engaged for many years in the ■Southern coastal trade. She was in the Aiickland-Gisborne trade from 1924 to 1927. She was then laid up and later purchased by the firm of Borlase and McKay. In the 'nineties the Wainui went ashore on the Beef Barrels near D'Urville Island in Cook Strait and had to lie beached in a neighbouring bay until repairs were made. Twenty years ago, when the barque Wai-iti was dismasted in Kaipara Harbour, the Wainui towed the sailer to Lyttelton. The Wainui will add one to a number of old Union Company steamew to end their days as a breakwater, others being the Monowai, Talune, Te Anau and Wellington.
