TROTTING.

NEW ZEALAND CUP. i TWENTY-FOUR NOMINATIONS. NO NOTABLE ABSENTEES. A PRELIMINARY REVIEW. (B.t Telegraph,—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Metropolitan Trotting Club has received a nomination of 24 horses for this season's New Zealand Cup, which must be considered highly satisfactory. The altered conditions under which the race will be run have caused an extra amount of interest to be taken in the big November contest. In the past the race has been held on the first day of the meeting, but for this year's event two qualifying divisions will bo run on the first day and the first four in each will run in the final on the second day. There are no noticeable absentees and of those in training eligible Black Admiral, Logan Chief. Loganwooil, Machine Gun, Money Spider and Pluto are the only horses not nominated. Black Admiral has not been racing well of late and is : not on the improve. Logan Chief is on the down grade, as regards two-mile events at least, while Loganwood's chance, on account of unsoundness, was very remote, in addition to which lie ie not a real two-miler. Machine Gun does not race Veil on lefthanded courses and is not improving, although he ie a great stayer, Money Spider qualified for the race on a. very fast track in August, but the trotter would find the task of beating the pacers beyond his powers in the Cup. Pluto was another who qualified for the lace at the same time as Money Spider, but it was not expected that lie would be entered for the race, as the new handicapping conditions give him a chance in slower class events. The New Zealand Cup is a 4.26 class or better, and Pluto was handicapped when he last raced at 4.30. Twelve in Each Heat. The 24 horees • nominated) if all survive the severe preparation, will mean 12 in each race on the first day, but it is more than probable that about nine or ten will be found in «ach division. With the exception of Gold Jacket, Jewel Pointer, Koliara, Padlock, Peter Bingcn and Peterwah, the field are, all South Island-trained. Gold Jacket, Peter 'Bingen and Jewel Pointer are trained in the Auckland province. Peterwah :> owned and trained in Gisborne, and :- the only trotter in the race. Padlock is trained at Palmers ton North, and Kohara, at Hawera. C. S. Donald, with Jack Potte and Quality, and W. J, Tomkinson, with Logan Park and Prince Pointer, are the only trainers with more than one representative. Tlw firstnamed are trained at Belfast, whilst Tomkinson's pair are at Addiugton, where Linkman is also trained. Author Jinks and Roi I*or are South Canterbury representatives, the former being trained.at Pleasant Point and Hoi l'Or at Waimate. Imprint is back again in Nelson, where he will be prepared by L. F. Berkett, and Terence Dillon is North Otago'e hope, being trained at Oaniaru. Kingcraft is owned in the Ashburton district, and Daphne de Oro and Talaro will do most of their training work on the old Canterbury Park track. Ahuriri, Cardinal Logan, Great Bingen, Waitaki Girl, King Pointer and Dundas Boy will all be trained on private tracks. Promising Young Horses. A pleasing feature about the nominations for this season's New Zealand Cup is the number of comparatively oung hdrsee i.who are likely to show considerable improvement, and this will jiivo increased interest to the contest. Author Jinke, Kingcraft, Roi l'Or, Linkmau, King Pointer and Dundas Boy may be found to be considerably better than their handicapped mark. Great Bingen has registered 4.19 2-5 and Almriri 4.20 3-o, and these two have the fastest records. Prince Pointer and Waitaki GirljWith 4.22, being next in order, while the trotter Peterwah won a two-mile event at Addiiigton in 4.23 4.5. The handicaps for the race are due by Mr. George Paul on October 2, and although it will be awaited with great interest there is a, general opinion regarding the marks on which most of the entrants will appear. Ahuriri, Author Jinks, Gold Jacket, Kingcraft, Padlock, Peter Bingen (last year's winner), Roi l'Or, Dundas Boy and Terence Dillon are at present the popular fancies for the race.

THE WAIKATO MEETING. Dealer should be included among the nominations for the Fraukton Handicap and Visitors' Handicap to be decided at the Waikato Trotting Club"s spring meeting.
