There was a very, severe hail storm in the Maungatapere district, and towards the centre cf the peninsula at Wairoa Falls the hailstones we're as large as thrushes' eggs. Several windows were smashed. In the gardens much .• tender growth was stripped. The hail quickly passed, and was succeeded by a particularly heavy downpour, of rain. • Variable weather during the past few weeks has had a retarding effect upon early /seasonal growth., . . . ;
