THE GREAT BED OF WARE.
In the catalogue of an auction m Ware in 1864 "the celebrated Great Bed of Ware" ia described as having been formerly preserved in the Old Manor House, where the Fanshawe family resided. It ia. said to bear the date 1463; but perhaps the date may have been a later addition. Indeed, the catalogue points out that the union of the Houses of York and Lancaster, which the carving on the tester is supposed to commemorate, did not take place till some years later. In one catalogue someone added the following notes: "Sold to Mr. Charles Dickens at 100 guineas. The man was 30 years making it. The last that slept in it were 24 soldiers." The, bed now at "Rye House.. The fact that Tie bed is mentioned by Shakespeare would probably make it a far more valuable piece in an auction room to-da; - .
