SALOON-WRECKING BEAR.
NICKNAMED "CARRIE .NATION." Because she believed in prohibition, an Alaskan brown bear has been behind bars for a quarter of a century. In 1904 the bear arrived at a saloon in Seward, Alaska. -She was one year old then, but was big and strong. The bear learned to drink beer and even stronger liquor. She cleared the streets of dogs and frightened. .all newcomers from the hills. ' But one cold night she suddenly repented. Becoming she smashed a salpon window. Fascinated by the clink , of glass, the big bear waded into the emporium and wrecked it. Three other saloons met the same fate before the animal was subdued. Nicknamed Carrie Nation, the bear was considered a menace to the pioneer town. So citizens presented the captive to the Seattle Park Board. Carrie arrived there in the fall of 1904 and moved into the Zoo. She has been there ever since. Old age has fallen lightly on her shoulders. She is liGalthy, happy and fat, weighing over 1000 pounds, and stands four feet.
