Although Jewel Pointer lias been nominated for' the New Zealand Trotting Cup, the son of Logan Pointer may not be sent South. During the past three weeks he has done no work on the tracks and it k hardly likely he could be brought to the top of his form by Cup time. Of course, A. Julian may be able ro (To so, but in the meantime those who fancy Jewel Pointer's chance in the Cup would do well to wait a week or two before entrusting him with any of their money. Any additions to the ranks of local trainers are always welcome, particularly if it means more horses in work at 'Epsom. The arrival of A. Bryee from Christchurch with three pacers should do something toward making the training work more interesting. Hit* i team comprises Mr. E. H. Cuekiscy's tniart mare, Evelyn Locanda, and the Messrs. McKendrick Bros.' pacers, Student Prince and Choysa. Student Prince had his first .start in June, when he scored at Ashburton, and -Choysa has placed performances, but is to be regarded as likely to score very sooli. ' Auckland province has contributed Jewel Pointer, Peter Bingen and Cold ' Jacket to the New Zealand Cup nomina- ' tions. Jewel Pointer can be counted out for the present, and beyond the fact that Peter Bingen looked in great order when he raced in June to undergo a Cup preparation, nothing is known about last year's Cup winner. Gold > Jacket, on the other hand, is at Epsom and L. McMahon has the black gelding going in great style. With a race or • two °at the Auckland meeting next month, Gold Jacket should be right at • the top of his form in November, and - though it will mean a great performance r to survive a heat and final, the Auck- - lander is, In addition to being good, one of the hardy sort, able to stand two solid races. Aucklanders will also be inter- .' ested in Dundas Boy, because the chest--5 nut, although trained in the South by ' R. Berrv, is owned by the popular Aucki land sportsman, Mr. Geo. McMillan. ; Both Gold Jacket and Dundas Boy will be among the early favourites, although ! the big tip in the' South is Kingcraft. Already there have been one or two - certainties under the new system of han- . dicapping, and another seems to be in • sight if Lingbergh is brought to AuckI land for the Waikato meeting on October 12. It is not usual to penalise horses 1 for a third performance, but even if an ' exception.is made of Lindbergh he seems r to have a "Boston crab" hold upon the big end of the stake. Off a 4.36 mark a in his last start at Addington he finished ;" third in the Belgium Handicap, after e setting a bad run and meeting with con- . siderable attention from another driver in the race. To finish third Lindbergh ' went 4.28 4-5, and, if not penalised, will i, be on 4.30 in the Mark Memorial. If l > time counts for anything then the race e might well be called the "Lindbergn Handicap." o
