The Jewish Women's Benevolent Society are holding a dance, which has been arranged by Mrs. A. Follick, in aid of the hospital auxiliary fund, at Dixieland, next Thursday evening. * * • • Womenfolk of tho Jewish community in Christchurch were entertained by Mrs. Bernhard Ballin, last week, at her home in Naseby Street, Merivale, in honour of Mrs. Irwell, Mrs. David Nathan and Miss Enid Forster, who ars on a visit to Christchurcli. In an address Mrs. Irwell spoke briefly on the life of the people in Jerusalem, and of the Jewish Plunket work there. * * • 4 A very enjoyable little bridge party was given by Mrs. S. T. Wicksteed at the Lyceum" Club y&sterday afternoon. The lounge, where Mrs. Wicksteed received tho guests, was beautifully arranged with large vaeee containing white azaleas, and the hostess wore a frock of deep amethyst figured ring velvet. Amongst the players were: Mrs. T. Olarkson, Mrs. A. Sutherland, Mrs. C. Puscke, Mrs. J. Miller, Mrs. W. Watkine, Mrs. L. Mitchell, Mrs. Scrymski, Mrs. Wily, Mrs. Dawson, Mrs. Walos, Mrs. Huddleston, Mrs. Entrican and Mrs. J. Kirk. * * * » The September meeting of the Women's Institute at Grcenhithc took the form of "a useful and instructive demonstration of cooking by electricity given by an expert. There was a good attendance of members and friends, who watched interestedly the preparation of various ■kinds of scones, cakes, etc. When these appetising viands came out of the ovcn| everyone was loud in praise. After the demonstration the food cooked was handed round for aoftcrnoon tea, and all: thoso present, as they enjoyed the; delightful delicacies, hoped some day to! be the possessor of a similar stove. Mre.j Pitcher proposed a hearty vote of thanks j to the expert for her very able- and interesting demonstration. » * * * A social and card tournament in aid of the Henderson Bowling and Croquet Clubs was held in the Foresters' Hall on Thursday night, the hostesses being Mesdames Hogan, Massey, McLeod, Schramm, Newton and Goddard. About 70 persona were present, and a pleasant and enjoyable evening was spent. The results were as follow:—Ladies 500, Mrs. F. J. McKay, 1; Mrs. Carroll, 2; consolation, Mrs. S. Hughes; men's 500, Mr. Sinkovich, 1; Mr. Pook, 2; consolation, Mr. Carter. In the competitions the winners were Mrs. Pook and Mr. Quintal. The proceeds amounted to £5 5/0. * » • • The monthly meeting and "At Home" of the ladies' auxiliary of the Commuunity Sunshine Club was held yesterday afternoon. The president, Mrs. Ferner, reported having visited and spoken at ono or two gatherings in the outlying districts on the aims and objects of the work among tho children and young people of the city. The proceeds of the recent street collection amounted to £917 6/2, while the expenses were £18 10/. The building would be begun immediately. Many plans were discussed over the tea cups, and a pleasant afternoon was spent. Among those present were: Mesdames Pratt, Eaton, Taylor, Jackson, Kerr, McLachlan, O'Brien, Green, Gaudin, Harrison, Winks, Miss Davies and Miss O'Brien. » * • • A dance was held in the Matiere Hall on Friday night in aid of the' Catholic Church, and the music was supplied by the Merry Six Orchestra. A purse was won by Mr. J. Gordon, and a tray-cloth was won by Miss- Dalesfield, of Ohura, while a <ake was won by Master W. Grenn. Amongst those present were: Mesdames M. Weinburg, wearing blue silk; I. Kelly, apricot crepe de dime; I. Carter, blue taffeta silk; D. Alanson, cream satin and blue lace; E. De Malnmnche, blue crepe de chine and cream lace; A. Sandison, pink silk tafleta; E. Boss, black satin.and shawl; K. Margan, apricot georgette; H. Longley, blue crepe de chine; R. Ehynd, apricot satin and coloured lace; M. A party was given for Mrs. J. Sinclair, of Walmsley Road, Mangere, on Tuesday evening. Mrs. Sinclair received her guests wearing black satin. Among those present were:—Mrs. T. Stanley Bay Croquet Club held a successful card* afternoon on Thursday at the Masonic Hall, Devenport. In spite of the bad weather there were 14 tables in use, and the guests had a very enjoyable time. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the club. The winning ladies were: For bridge, Mrs. O'Halloran; 500, Mrs. Hughes; euchre, Mrs. Buchanan. Mr. Pepper, the club's coach, accompanied the boys and their friends at the evening. The supper tables were gay with spring flowers intermixed with the club's colours; about fifty guests were entertained. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Allan, black beaded satin, jet girdle; Miss R. Taylor, green georgette, silver lace; Miss Jean Ronson, Tpricott chenille georgette; Miss D. Boulton, pink crepe de chine, metal lace; Miss M. Kelly, lacquer red velvet; Miss T. The League of Penwomen held an unusual afternoon on Thursday in their rooms. The setting was Oriental in ornamentation, panels of Chinese brushwork and embroidery having been hung on the walls, incense burners placed about the room, and numbers of Chinese lanterns suspended from the ceiling. The stage had been turned into an Oriental scene, and the performers taking part in the different items were in Oriental dress. The programme opened with an overture of Chinese records, followed by a Chinese play (translated), in which Mrs. Griffith., Miss Robinson, Mrs. Nello Porter, Miss Greville, Mrs. Richmond, Miss Bertram and Miss Peacock took part. Mrs. Victor Macky recited some exquisite Chinese poems mostly of the 7th century, written by LI Tai Po, Chang Chi and Tu Fu. Three Wise Women from the East disclosed many mysteries and later a 'cello solo "A Song of India," was played by Miss Nellie Simpson, with Mrs. Herald as hei accompanist. A reading from "Th( Light of Asia" was given by Dr. Mildrec Staley and Mrs. Nelio Porter, and songs I were sung by Mrs. Harold King and Mis; Amy Hansard. The Three Wise Womei were Mrs. Axford, Miss Bertram anc Mrs. H. H. Farazon. Supper brought t( an end a very pleasant evening.
A very enjoyable function took place at tho Scots Hall last evening, when the annual Law and Insurance convereazione was held. There was a good attendance, and it was most apparent that everyone enjoyed the excellent programme of entertainment that was given. The hall, which had been arranged cabaret fashion, was artistically decorated with orange shaded Iceland poppies and golden daffodils, and from the ceiling streamers in orange and green were suspended. On the stage tiny lights twinkled among ferns and maases of greenery. A efaort speech of welcome was made by Mr. H. Duncan, who was host for the evening. Among those present were: Mrs. H. Mrs. Roy Cooper, Mrs. T. Miller, Mrs. A. E. Moore, Mrs. Tregear, Mrs. H. Frost, Mrs. G. A Buisson, Mrs. Robert Pyecroft, Mrs. W. R. Ryeburn, Mrs. R. G. Scllar, Mrs. W. Johnson, Mrs. H. J.
