THE ATIAMURI LEGEND.
| The version of the above as narrated by Mf* H. D. Dansey, very largely follows _ Grey 8 in "Polynesian Mythology." Grey gives precise location of the ogress' cave, but states that Haatupatu set out on a bird-snaring expedition in a district lying between Lakes Taup and Rotorua. To my mind it is doubt whether there ever was any authorised versio of these fairy tales. There was not the 6am necessity or inducement for exact repetitio as there was in matters of genealogy or 0 ritual of incantations. But Grey, writing he did eighty years ago, would probably had much better opportunities than we . to-day of securing an orthodox version. ' KORERO noa.
