ALL THE BEST.

DOMINION CHAMPIONS IN TROTTING CUP. CANDIDATES AND THEIR RECORDS. PEOMISE OP A GEEAT CONTEST. The nomination of 24 horses for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, to be decided on November 12 at Addington, is in every way satisfactory, and with such a formidable list the committee of the Metropolitan Club will feel the right thing has been done in deciding that the race this year be run in two heats and a final. Had the old order of deciding the race in one run been adhered to it is very evident that all the candidates would not have had a fair chance, and the backmarkers in particular would have had to be very fortunate to get a good passage. In the entries for the coming race are Ahuriri, winner of the race twice, and Kohara and Peter Bingen, who have Avon the event once each. Also there .are Auckland Cup winners in Talaro, Gold Jackct, and in addition are all the best pacers in the land, also the champion trotter Peterwah. The handicaps are due on Wednesday of next week, but the divisions will be drawn by lot and published on October 31, the first payment of Bsovs falling due on October 17. It is worth noting that two trainers (C. S. Donald and W. Tomkinson) have each two horses in the race, Donald training Jack Potts and Quality and Tomkinson Logan Park and Prince Pointer. The conditions of the race provide for one representative in each division. Below will be found the horses nominated and their record at two miles:— Great Bingen 4.19 2-5 Ahuriri 4.20 3-5 Padlock 4.21 . Waitaki Girl 4.22 }J Prince Pointer 4.22 "ii- Peter Bingen 4.22 1-5 »|. CHAMPION LADY DRIVER.

DRIVES HIGHLAND SCOTT TO 1.59£. As a unique and highly pleasing harness horse spectacle, nothing that has ever happened created a greater thrill, in both the horsemen and the public, than Mrs. Harriman's exhibition mile with Highland Scott at Goshen on the 28th of last month. Of the performance the "American Horse Review" says: "In many rather, brisk previous workout miles in company with Mr. Harriman and trainer Will Dickerson, horsemen had complimented Mrs. Harriman upon her light hand, apparent lack of nervousness, or fear of any horse, regardless of its age oi 1 manners. And at both Hartford and Goshen her composure was just as apparent as at any time in lier life. The mile was beautifully rated, she held a nice tension on the great pacer, and, without any of the spectacular, hurrahing efforts such as are frequently observed in a great time effort, the horse .came steadily to the wire in i.59J. The entire performance reflects the fullest measure of credit upon the new champion woman driver, no small measure of credit being also due Will Dickerson for his clever fitting of the horse, rating of the mile and assistance in its successful consummation. "The story of Mrs. Harriman's achievement <ypens with her finding pleasure in assisting Will Dickerson, mentor of Arden Homestead Stable,, in training its members during the early spring season, now, for several years. Her skill with horses of either gait, and of all ages, her light-handed touch, and apparent lack of fear of any kind, have caused all who have observed her to marvel at her skill. A few weeks ago trainer Dickerson became convinced that Mrs. Harriman could drive Highland Scott a very fast mile, but as she has never been inclined to drive except in. private for recreation, the plan of trying for a public record with Highland Scott was not advanced until the fine order of the Charter Oak Park track, at Hartford, became the current topic of con-, versation in harness horse circles. And in order to avoid unsought-for publicity the exhibition mile she drove at Hartford was given without. formal public announcement.' However, it proved to be such a fine effort upon the part of the horse, his driver, and all associated with it, that Mrs. Harriman was requested to try for an even better technical record mile at Goshen, with the great stallion to sulky. The track was good,.the sun was glorious, but a considerable breeze through the second quarter did not favour the mighty effort. Mrs. Harriman scored Highland Scott down two or three times, came back, made another score with Dickerson driving the chestnut prompter, and' then another time down, with all points apparently favourable, Dickerson nodded for the word, and the ! mile was on. The quarter was "driven i in 30s, the half in 59|s, perfect rating, : the prompter lying at the pacer's flank, J and on they flew. People in all walks J of life seemed to rise spontaneously and pull for the success of the undertaking, and they raced on to the three-quarters in 1.295, rating mechanically perfect. 3 Then they flashed into the home stretch, . and the entire performance seemed ] staged in perfeot rhythm.
