A BORROWED TRUCK.
THEFT CHARGE DISMISSED. A charge of stealing a hand-truck, valued at £2 10/, the property of Thompson and Hills, was-, brought awain.it Carl Wilson, who appeared at the Police Court this morning on summons. Mr. Sellar represented Wilson* who denied the charge. Alfred Drew, a van driver employed by Thompson and Hills, said he took a load of jam down to Queen's wharf on June 13 last. While absent for 20 minute? looking for a tally clerk, a hand-truck was taken from his van. ITc did not it again until ten • week- later at the wharf police station. The loss was reported to the police. Witness identified a brand on the truck. Another employee of the firm who saw the truck and informed the police, then gave evidence. " Constable Chalcraft said he went to Seager's foundry where Wilson was employed and interviewed defendant. Wilson produced the truck which was in the foundry. His explanation was that on the day in question he had carted a load of hardware to the Queen's wharf and borrowed the truck from a man whom he did not know. Wilson added that he thought the man who lent the truck was in charge of a van, bnt he did not notice any name on the van. After using the truck he took it hack, hut found the man had gone. Not wishing to leave the truck on the wharf ho took the truck back to the foundry where he was employed as a driver. He told tlie foreman about the truck. After defendant had given evidence, the magistrate dismissed the charge against him.
